Ruby Nell Riley Parkey

by DFH Inc. on 12/07/17

Ruby Nell Riley Parkey, 96, the third of fourteen children was born October 21, 1921 to the late Melvyn and Nettie Fugate Riley in Kodak, Kentucky. “Rube” as she was affectionately known, attended public schools in Kodak, but graduated from high school in Middlesbrough, Kentucky and received a degree in education from Swift Memorial College in Rogersville, Tennessee. She taught Grammar School in Sulphur Hollow, Tennessee. Ruby and her husband the late Fred D. Parkey, Sr. moved to Baltimore, Maryland in the late 1940s where she remained for over 60 years. While in Baltimore she held various jobs at Baltimore Spice Company and the Food Fare Grocery Store until her retirement. During her later years Ruby her daughter Tyra and grandson Skyler moved to Mt. Jackson, Virginia to live with her son Fred (Buck) and his wife Maureen. A special thanks to Maureen for being so kind and taking care of Ruby. Ruby was quiet in nature yet strong willed and loyal. She had a gigantic heart, was extremely generous and never expected anything in return. She was a kind hearted and giving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She let everyone know that her greatest joy was her family. Her time was divided between nurturing, mentoring, counseling and teaching her children how to become giving and kind adults that put the needs of others above their own. She lead by example. She was slow to anger and quick to forgive. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. Ruby spent her happiest times in the company of her family. One of her favorite pastimes was cooking delicious meals for her family and others who stopped by to visit, and watching the soap operas during the day. You were not allowed to talk while the stories were on so that she would not miss what was going on. Her priority and focus her entire life was to make the world a better place. She was a blessing to all that knew her. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. After suffering some health challenges Ruby said she was ready for her journey to eternity where there is no more sickness or pain. You would often hear her singing or humming one of her favorite songs, “Soon and Very Soon, I am Going to see the King.” Ruby was preceded in death by her parents Melvyn and Nettie Riley; husband Fred D. Parkey, Sr.; son Fred D. Parkey, Jr. (Maureen) and grandson Skyler Parkey whom she adored. She is survived by her daughters Greta Faye Moore (Steve) and Tyra Parkey; son Gerald Parkey; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblingsDoris Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana, Charity Collins, Daniel Chester Riley, Milton Riley and William Kenneth Riley all of Morristown, Isabelle McBride of Baltimore, Maryland and Mildred Yeary of Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Ruby will also be fondly remembered and missed by a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, distant relatives and numerous friends whom loved her dearly. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 10th at Dockery-Senter Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
