A Life Well Lived

Eddie R. Guthrie, Sr., peacefully transitioned to his Heavenly Home on Father’s Day, June 19, 2022, surrounded by his son, granddaughter Aminia, brother James, Sr., and nephew, James, Jr.

Eddie was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on May 30, 1931 to Roosevelt and Julia Mae Guthrie. He graduated from Orange Training High School and Morristown College. He excelled in football, archery and other sports. He was a U. S. Army veteran, serving his country in the Korean War. On October 14, 1956, he married his sweetheart, Geneva Moore. They had two sons and were blessed with 66 years of marriage.

Eddie worked for Berkline, and he retired after 40 years of service. Less than two weeks later, he began another career with the City of Morristown, working for the Parks and Recreation Department. He retired again on May 28, 2022, two days short of his 90th birthday. He was a long-time official, referee, and umpire for the TSSAA and other sports organizations. A highlight of his second career was refereeing the 2008 TSSAA State High School Football game at the age of 77. He worked as an ECO until 2016. He served as an amazing example to countless young athletes throughout the state.

Eddie was a kind and gentle soul who loved God, people, and his church. He led by example, and he was always willing to share his words of wisdom by providing an answer to any question. He was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and a member of the Male Chorus.
