Joan Summers

Joan Summers, age 68, was born on June 23, 1947 in Morristown, TN and finished her race January 20, 2016 at her home surrounded by family.

She was a 1969 graduate of Bennett College and proceeded to work at Lockeed Martin for the next 27 years, retiring in 1996.  She was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Morristown.  Joan was a devoted mother and will be remembered for her love, kindness, strength, generosity and mostly trust in the knowledge that God was always in control.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Allen C. Summers and Beatrice Summers; grandparents: Tom & Amanda Treece and Floyd & Alice Summers; uncle: Chester Jobe; aunts: Alemeda Jobe and Aunt Jim; and good friend Jean Stokes of Paducah, KY.

She is survived by her son: Marc (Margie) Summers; brother: Tommy F. (Carolyn) Summers; nephews: Tommy (Elia) Summers Jr., of Forney, TX, and Shawn (Tracy) Summers of Morristown; niece: Danyell Summers of Morristown; great-nephew: Tommy “Trey” Summers III; great-nieces: Aaliyah Summers, Mya Summers, Faythe Summers and Zariyah Oxendine, who called her “Auntie”; and special cousins: Phrysila Johnson and Adam Oxendine.  She has many more cousins and special friends, including Lina Nicholas Bradely, Betty Peak, Mary Miller and Gail Woods.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 25, 2016 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 1800 Cherokee Drive, with the funeral service following at 2 p.m.  Interment will follow the service at Treece Cemetery.

My sincere condolences go out to the Summers family. Joan was a good friend and co worker of mine at Oak Ridge for years. I am so saddened about her passing. Thoughts and prayers are with each of you.
