Mae Stewart Long, “Sugar”

Mae Stewart Long, “Sugar”, 96, of Morristown, TN, passed away Friday, April 23, 2021, peacefully at her home.  She was a native of Hamblen County and a resident of Cherokee Drive for over 50 years.  Mae was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Walter Long Jr., “June”, and son Mackey S. Long, Sr., parents Reverend Troy D. (Bettie Nichols) Stewart, Sr., brothers Charles Edward (Adilene) Stewart, John Dennis Stewart, and Troy (Bessie Mae) Stewart, Jr., sisters Mary Ann (Anthony) Eckel, and Celia (Richard) Williams.  Survivors include, sisters Josephine (Julius) Scruggs and Sara Daily, son Walter D. (Karen) Long, daughter Evelyn J. Brown (Roger) and Bettie L. Kyle (Robert).

Mae accepted Christ at an early age and she was a member of Lawrence United Presbyterian Church.  She will be remembered for her love and faith in God.  Mae was employed by the late Senator Herbert S.  (Sarah) Walters, West High School, Holiday Inn, and Ramada Inn. 

“Sugar” was happiest when she was welcoming family and friends to the Long home for food, fun, fellowship, and a glass of cold sweet iced tea.  She always had a listening ear to those who needed it along with a hug, smile, and laughter.  She called her home “The Long’s Hotel” always full of hospitality for all who visited.

“Sugar and Daddy June” left a legacy of nine beautiful grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren to cherish along with several wonderful devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends of the family to love and adore.

Internment at Rock of Ages Cemetery, Thursday, April 29, 2021.  Private Graveside services will be held at noon by Dockery-Senter Funeral Home Inc.
